A YouTube channel is always a pretty boring place, if you don’t customize it. The cover photo is a great way to do this and it offers a lot of options to make it work on all platforms.
As much as we like to give you the image dimensions right away (okay, they are 2560×1440), there are some caveats that you will need to keep in mind.
Google has a pretty extensive page on the subject, but we decided we take it even a step further!
YouTube has been integrated with Google+, meaning that every additional YouTube channel that you create comes with its own Google+ page. Your channel icon is synchronized with your Google+ page, and you will have to edit it on Google+. The visible area is different however between Google+ and Youtube.
Your channel icon is fully visible on YouTube, but on Google+, it is displayed as a circle. Keep your important content within this circle. The full image is a square image of at least 250x250px.
Youtube channel cover dimension guidelines
Unlike the channel icon, the channel cover image is not linked to Google+. Check out our page about Google+ image dimensions for best image results on Google+.
The best size for a YouTube cover image is 2560x1440px. Depending on the size of the screen, it is cut off on static breakpoints to fit the screen.
Refer to our template above to create a cover photo that works for you.
Call to action
You can add links to up to five websites in your page header. The first website will also show the website title.
We have outlined the area with the website in our template. You can use it to make a “call-to-action”, to encourage your visitors to go to your website(s).
See it live
We have applied the template above to our own YouTube channel. Be sure to follow us to receive the latest updates on the cover dimensions for YouTube and other social media properties!
We have created a PSD (Photoshop) template for your convenience. This PSD contains guidelines on the important breakpoints.
